Ban Penalties
The OL Admin Team is in the process of developing guidelines for ban penalties for bad behavior. Guidelines are just that, not written in stone, giving flexibility depending on each individual case.
Match disturbance, player harassment, language, cheat accusations in public (1 day -7 days, longer for repeat offenders)
Using cheats on public servers or in other leagues (6-9 months).
Repeat offenders: 1 year to life.
The admins need your input to help keep this league free of cheaters, fun robbers and such. Any suspicions should be brought to our attention. Gossiping among players only undermines the league. So, please, if you have any concerns, suspicions or problems with any players, report it to the OL admin board account on the league site.
Reciprocal bans in OL will be applied on a case by case review.
While OL is not a democracy, it’s not a police state either. We want it to be fun for all on the servers without any hassles.
Q: Can I join more than one team?
A: No. There is a very strict rule that forbids joining more than one team. Creating multiple accounts to attempt to get around this rule is not allowed. There are many reasons for this rule. For one, it would allow a 'dummy' team to be created for the purpose of beating them to inflate your own team's score.
Q: Which servers will the OpenLeague matches be played on? And which settings will be used?
A: You can use only official OpenLeague match servers for playing official OpenLeague matches. These servers are setup for two team CTF (normally red vs. green and max. 4 players each team) with the same babel-style map and configuration; 3 shots, ricochet, jumping and no superflags.
Current 'Babel' match servers are:
Version 2.0.x
Current Weekly random map match servers are:
Version 2.0.x
bzbattleground and uk.openleague.net servers record matches as well, available for replay on port:5189 for babel and port:5289 for weekly random maps.
Q: Where do we meet before a battle?
A: The best place is on IRC (Internet Relay Chat) channel '#openleague.net' on the Freenode Network (server 'irc.freenode.net'). To access IRC, you need an IRC client program. There are several available for the popular operating systems. For Windows, you might want to try mirc (www.mirc.com). Web-based access is also available via:
* my.bzflag.org/irc
* irc.zeebrothers.net
Q: How do you score in a match?
A: The matches will be CTF style, i.e. Capture The Flag. Each team (red vs. green) has a base and a flag. A team scores +1 by carrying the opposing team's flag onto their own base. The other team will then lose 1 point. BZFlag will also keep an individual score for each player, but this is not important for the matches.
Q: When does a match start? And when does it end?
A: Matches have a fixed duration of 15, 20, 30, 45, 60 minutes. The battle starts as soon as both teams are ready. When both teams have indicated that they are ready, the designated starter issues the /countdown command. Ideally there should be some kind of referee watching the battle and giving the start signal. After the match is over, the team with the higher score is the winner. If both teams have the same score, it is a draw.
Q: What about the ranking on the league site?
A: When your team played an official match, you and the other team should figure out who contacts one of the players listed on Contact to enter the result on the league site. Tell her/him the teams, the result and when you played. Please use the GMT timezone for the date info or inform her/him in which timezone you live.
More information can be found in the FAQ section.
The more matches your team wins, the better your ranking. :o)
Q: How many players are needed to play an official match?
A: Official matches require at least 2 players for every team. Any thing 2v2 or 2v2 plus is allowed.
Q: Some teams have 20 players, others only 3? Isn't that unfair?
A: First of all...as you can read above, it's allowed to play 2vs2, 3vs3 and 4vs4 matches. So you have a limit of 2, 3 or 4 players from each team at the same time. Teams which have more than 2, 3 or 4 players are allowed to substitute players during a battle. However, this is discouraged and should not be abused. Furthermore, it's a good idea to have more than 4 players in a team anyway because some people might not be able to show up for some matches.
Q: I have not enough teammates to play a match. Can another player play for my team if the other team agrees?
A: No. If this player wants to play for your team, let her/him join. It's not intended/allowed to 'borrow' players for official matches.
Q: Can I watch a match although I am not participating?
A: You will be able to join the server as an observer. To do so, simply set your team accordingly before joining. The number of observers must be limited for technical reasons, so only a handful people will be allowed.
Q: What if the lag is too high?
A: Before you start a match you should check the lag (type '/lagstats' in the text panel). If you think that some players' lags are too high to have a fair match, tell the others and try to find a solution (Change players, match server, adjourn the match,...).
Please do this before you start the contest, because it's not that easy to solve a problem like this during the match.
Q: We started a match 2v2, and someone had to leave, what happens now?
A: Preferably, the match will be paused, and a substitute can be found. If not, both teams should agree to either cancel the match, continue the match 2v1, or continue the match at another time. If both teams do not agree to this, then one of two things must happen:
1) If the leading team has lost a player, the match is simply cancelled.
2) If the trailing team lost the player, it is a forfeit, and the score at the time of losing the player is entered.
Q: Something unexpected/abnormal happened that might have effect on the match's result. What can I/we do?
A: Nothing, because it already happened...but to keep it fair...use your common sense, discuss with the other team, ask a referee or admin...and you will find a good solution.
It shouldn't be necessary, but let's play it safe:
* Do not harrass or use personal insults against other players, and refrain from using any profanity.
* Cheating and cheat modifications (no matter what kind) are not allowed.
